Barrow’s Volunteers

Barrow’s Volunteers, formed under Captain Lousada Barrow of the 5th Madras Light Cavalry at Allahabad in 1857, and served under both Sir Henry Havelock and Sir Colin Campbell. They were disbanded in 1859.
The first volunteers were Lieutenant Grant of the 3rd Madras Europeans, Lieutenant Swanston of the 7th Madras Native Infantry, Ensigns Brander of the 37th BNI, Stuart and Hare of the 17th BNI, Pearson of the 27th BNI and Woodgate of the 11th BNI. Cornet Fergusson of the 8th Bengal Light Cavalry. A further eight men of the railways joined up. None of the ensigns had had a chance to join their corps before they mutinied. Indigo planters, shopkeepers and civilians out of employ soon swelled the ranks, but when they marched from Allahabad with Havelock, they initially only mustered 18 men. On the march to Cawnpore, a further four officers joined, and the compliment remained so until they crossed the Ganges to Cawnpore. They were then strengthened by 40 men from various regiments and another eight volunteers. Eventually, Barrow would have 80 men under him for the advance on Lucknow.
