The Artillery

The Naval Brigade served both as infantry and artillery during the mutiny. Some of them even had the opportunity to try their hand at cavalry, but this was less successful. As such, their exploits are included here.

| Roberts, Frederick Sleigh. Forty-One Years in India. 2 vols. London: Richard Bentley & Son, 1897. | Started his career with the Bengal Artillery in 1851. He became Aide-de-Camp to his father in 1852 and transferred to the Bengal Horse Artillery in 1854. During the mutiny, he saw action in the Punjab, Delhi and other theatres of war, including Lucknow. He served mainly in staff positions. |

| Bourchier, George. Eight Months’ Campaign Against the Bengal Sepoy Army during the Mutiny of 1857. London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1858. | Bengal Horse Artillery. During the Indian Mutiny, Bourchier commanded a battery at Trimu Ghat and was present at the siege and capture of Delhi. He was attached to the Delhi Column, fought at Bulandshahr and Agra; present at the 2nd Relief of Lucknow and the Battle of Cawnpore. Bourchier’s service in the mutiny ended in early 1858. |

| Paget, Georgiana. Camp & Cantonment; A Journal of Life in India in 1857-1859. London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green. 1865 | Mrs Paget spends much time describing her life but “A Short Narrative of the Pursuit of the Rebels in Central India or How I Helped in the Pursuit of Tantia Tope,” written by her husband, who commanded a battery of Royal Horse Artillery in the Central India Campaign, is the only reason this book is in this section. |
