The 12th of August, 1857 – the Third Battle of Basharatganj

You will be surprised to hear that I am acting Aide-de-Camp to General Havelock. He wished Major Stephenson to recommend him and A.D.C. so the Major recommended me. The work is very hard as there is an immense deal of copying to do. I am sometimes writing from 6 a.m. till 8 p.m. We gave the enemy a tremendous thrashing on the 5th and 12th of this month at Busaratgunge, and captured several guns, but, we had several men killed and Grant of ours received a flesh wound in his leg. On the 5th and the 12th, I was 15 hours in the saddle. I have now been 8 times under the enemy’s fire within one month. They fire uncommonly well, as they artillery men trained by us, and, have our best guns, which they have plundered from our Magazines…but really war is a dreadful thing, when you see poor fellows lying shot through every part of the body and cut completely asunder by round shot.” (Lt. Hargood, 1st Madras Fusiliers, Cawnpore, 14th August 1857)

This may be the moment to mention the number of bullocks we had lost in action, up to the 13th of August. Namely, 6 at the battle of Aong and Pandoo Nuddee; 4 at Cawnpore; 4 at Bussarat Gunj; and 12 at Bithoor. But, en revanche., the Artillery took possession of 10 bullocks belonging to the rebels, at Futtehpore; 14 at Aong and Pandoo River; 60 at the battle of Cawnpore and 6 at Onao and Bussarat Gunj; the whole of which we handed over to the Commissariat: making a total of 90, as against 20 killed in action. Of course, the latter were none the worse as edibles.” (F.C.Maude)
