Hale, Mrs Frances Ellen. Wife of G.H. Hale, 2nd Oude Irregular Infantry. In the grave list of Hilton: the wife and daughter of Lieut. Adjt. George Herbert Hale, 2nd Oude Irregular Infantry, both Frances and the infant Kate Caroline Sophia are listed as died on 30th June 1857. According to Mrs Bartrum, Mrs Hale died on the 29th of June, of cholera, after only 3 hours of illness. Her daughter, Kate, was given over to the care of Major and  Mrs Marriot, but she died “just before Havelock entered Lucknow.” (Bartrum, pp. 25-26). On the family gravestone, Frances is noted to be 20 years old at the time of her death.

Healy, John. Cpl. H.M.32nd Foot. Aged 20. Wounded 13 July, “by a round shot on the right wrist, carrying away the hand. The forearm was amputated the same day by double flaps under chloroform. The stump assumed an unhealthy appearance, and sloughed. One large piece of bone came away. Amputation was a second time performed on board a ship, at the Cape of Good Hope, April 13, 1858, eight months after the accident. The stump has never entirely healed.” Unfortunately, he died at the hospital at Fort Pitt on 27 June 1858, having been admitted with his stump in a poor state. An autopsy revealed that gangrene was the cause of death. (Williamson, p. 96)

Hogan, Private Cornelius, 32nd Regt. of Foot. Wounded in the left hip, “an inch and a half below the crest of the left ilium, and nearly midway between the anterior and superior spinous process of the ilium and the spinous process of the back. The ball entered and must have passed into or wounded the sigmoid flexure of the colon.” The bullet was never found, but he enjoyed relatively good health, enough so that he was court-martialled on December 9 1858 and sentenced to 42 days’ imprisonment at Fort Clarence. The surgeon tried to ensure he was not given any duties that would cause his wound to re-open, but in that he failed, and Hogan was sent to the hospital at Fort Pitt in January 1859. He was finally invalided on March 13 1859, by which time his wound had healed completely. (Williamson, p. 43)
