Bibliography I – Gazetteers, Bulletins and History

District Gazetteers

The District Gazetteers of India are comprehensive, encyclopaedic catalogues detailing the geography, history, culture, and socioeconomic conditions of individual districts. Initiated by the East India Company in the early 19th century, the project evolved into the massive Imperial Gazetteer of India and remains a crucial historical and administrative resource.

Bulletins and Other State Intelligence

These often dry, military reports are the mainstay of much of the writing on this site. While the history books cover the larger battles, important sieges and the interesting events, the smaller conflicts are often overlooked. With the dispatches and correspondence, it is often possible to piece together narratives that otherwise receive only a line in other books. It is also possible to have a clearer perspective on the battle itself without the descriptive noise, while giving us lists of casualties. It is worth noting that the Appendices and Further Papers do take some getting used to, as they are not indexed and can appear random. Anyone delving into these is advised to have paper & pen on hand to take notes, as you will never find the same entry twice.

The joy knows no bounds.
